Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Turkey Decided to carry on the Dialogue

Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Turkey Decided to carry on the Dialogue

Foreign Minister of Armenia Vardan Oskanian met with his colleague from Turkey, Ali Babacan in New York. This was Babacan’s last bilateral meeting in the frameworks of UN General Assembly session.

Besides the National Television of Turkey, the meeting was also illustrated by a number of newspapers, which report the following phrase of the Turkish Foreign Minister, addressed to Oskanian: “We are always ready for dialogue”.

Babacan told the Turkish reporters that the idea of the meeting belonged to the Armenian side. The Turkish minister added that the meeting was rather a preliminary acquaintance of the representatives of Armenia and Turkey, during which a number of issues of common interest were discussed. Babacan raised the question of Resolution 106, pending at the US Congress, the decisions of the parliaments of other states concerning the “events of 1915”, the question of establishing a joint Armenian-Turkish group for studying the Genocide, as well as the conflict of Nagorno-Karabakh. “Decisions on history must not be made by parliamentary voting,” he said.

Foreign Minister of the Republic of Armenia made an accent on the question of unblocking the border between Armenia and Turkey. Babacan said in return that Turkey keeps on trading with Armenia via third states, that there is air communication between Armenia and Turkey and that a number of Armenian citizens are working at present in Turkey.

The meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Turkey lasted for about an hour. The meeting resulted in the agreement of the officials to carry on the dialogue between their states. It is supposed that the next meeting of Oskanian and Babacan will take place on October 25, in the frameworks of the BSEC conference.
