concerning the development of Armenia’s relations with EU -21.10

Yerevan, October 21. /Mediamax/. Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan

Oskanian said in Yerevan today that during the two-day talks with the

special representative of European Union (EU) in the South Caucasus,

Heikki Talvitie, a wide-range of issues were discussed concerning the

development of Armenia’s relations with EU.

Vartan Oskanian said today at a briefing that the political dialogue

between Armenia and EU consisted of three main components: the place and

role of Armenia and other South Caucasus countries in the expanding EU,

the problem of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement and Armenia’s

relations with its neighbors, especially with Turkey. According to

Vartan Oskanian, EU can play a definite role in the normalization of

Armenian-Turkish relations.

Besides, the process of political and economic reforms in Armenia and

the prospects of rearranging Armenian legislation in accord with EU

standards were discussed at the meeting in Yerevan, Armenian Foreign

Minister noted.

In reply to journalist’s questions, Heikki Talvitie said that EU

position in regard to the Armenian Nuclear Plant did not change – as

always EU speaks for shutting it down. According to Talvitie, the main

reason for EU concern is the fact that the station is situated in the

seismic activity zone. At the same time, EU special representative said

that “there are some new points in this issue too early to be spoken

of”. -0–
