ARMENIAN-TURKISH BUSINESS CONFERENCE IN YEREVAN – Turkish Armenian Business Development Council

Yerevan, Armenia – On November 22, 2011, a two-day conference of Armenian and Turkish businessmen launched at the Hotel Hrazdan in Yerevan. The event is organized by the Union of Manufacturers and Businessmen (Employers) of Armenia as part of the “Support to Armenia-Turkey Rapprochement” project, supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the Consortium of the Eurasia Partnership Foundation, Yerevan Press Club, International Center for Human Development and the Union of Manufacturers and Businessmen (Employers) of Armenia.

Dr. Cheema (left) and Noyan Soyak (center) at the event.The Union of Manufacturers and Businessmen (Employers) of Armenia (UMB(E)A) has invited approximately 30 businessmen who represent different cities (Istanbul, Ankara, Malatya, Igdir, Kars, and Diyarbakir) and business fields of Turkey including light industry, construction, furniture production, mining, jewelry and trade. Armenian businessmen also take part in the conference to discuss opportunities for business cooperation with their Turkish counterparts. Guest speakers will present the current state of affairs and prospects for Armenian-Turkish business cooperation. The conference also features an exposition of sample products manufactured by the participants from Turkey, allowing Armenian businessmen to learn about the assortment, quality and production technology of the showcased Turkish products.

Dr. Cheema speaking to the deputy mayor of Diyarbakir (Turkey).President of UMB(E)A Arsen Ghazaryan, USAID Armenia Mission Director Jatinder Cheema, and Co-Founder of the Turkish-Armenian Business Development Council (TABDC) Noyan Soyak opened the conference, during which memoranda on cooperation between Armenian and Turkish business organizations, including women-led business organizations, will be signed to help foster business cooperation between the two countries. In her opening remarks, Dr. Cheema thanked the partners for initiating the conference, noting that despite the challenges the presence of so many participants from both countries shows that there is interest in cooperation and positive working relationships between the Armenian and Turkish business communities.

USAID and the consortium members support the rapprochement between Armenia and Turkey by facilitating engagement between civil society groups, the establishment and development of business partnerships and regional professional networks, as well as enhanced understanding between the people, for peace and economic integration in the region.
