“We are ready to welcome the opening of the Turkish-Armenian border
and the lifting of the blockade of Armenia. Undoubtedly, the
establishment of peace, in itself, in the Karabakh conflict zone also
deserves approval,” the public relations director for the Armenian
Assembly of America, Rob Mosher, who is in Armenia with members of a
delegation of the heads and representatives of the staffs of US
Congressmen, has told our agency.
Asked how he viewed the opening of the borders in view of the Karabakh
conflict and the fact that Azerbaijan was pressing upon Turkey in this
issue, Mosher said: “Turkey should set an example for Azerbaijan on
this issue.”
He believes that the number of supporters of the opening of the
Turkish-Armenian border in Turkey is growing every day. Mosher
believes that the opening of the border meets the economic interests
of Turkey and will guarantee overall regional stability. The opening
of the borders will not only be a stimulus for Armenia but also for
the whole region by paving the way to stability in the region. He
noted that an unequal economic development of the countries will
increase the danger of conflicts.
According to figures from the US embassy in Armenia, GDP in Armenia
grew by 14 per cent in 2003 against 12 per cent in 2002, Mosher said:
“The presence of economic growth for Armenia, which is under blockade,
only adds weight to our arguments concerning the opening of the
borders.” |
