U.S. Secretary of State may meet Armenian, Turkish FMs in New York

New York may host a trilateral meeting involving Armenian, Turkish and Russian officials on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Zhamanak daily said.

However, no official confirmation of a possible meeting of the United States Secretary of State John Kerry, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu was given.

Armenia has no diplomatic relations with Turkey. The Armenian-Turkish border was blocked in 1993 at Ankara’s initiative, the move aimed to support Azeri stance on the Nagorno Karabakh conflcit.

A“football diplomacy” was launched by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and his Turkish counterpart Abdallah Gul when the latter attended a World Cup 2010 qualifying match in Yerevan on September 6, 2008. Sargsyan reciprocated by attending the next game in Bursa in October 2009, with the move followed by a meeting of the two leaders.

On October 10, 2009 Armenian and Turkish Foreign Ministers signed rapprochement protocols in Zurich. The process was delayed over differences on the final speech: Armenia intended to mention the Genocide, while Turkey was readying to speak about the Karabakh conflict. No final speech was eventually delivered.

Ratification of the protocols by the parliaments of Armenia and Turkey was frozen following the impasse, sparked by the declaration of Turkey expressing that ratification depends on progress in the Karabakh settlement negotiations.
