Armenia president withdraws Armenia-Turkey protocols from parliament

YEREVAN. – President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan has addressed speaker of Armenian parliament Galust Sahakyan informing about his decision to recall Armenia-Turkey protocols from the parliament.

In his letter, President Sargsyan said he imagined all possible scenarios since the launch of Armenia-Turkey normalization process.

“We were ready for comprehensive normalization of relations through ratification of the protocols and their failure, because we had nothing to hide, and for the international community it would be clear which of the parties was to blame for failing to open the last closed border in Europe, as well as for the missed opportunity,” he said.

During six years since the protocols were signed, Armenia has always had a consistent position on the implementation of the protocols.

“However, we must admit the lack of political will of the Turkish authorities, the distortion of the letter and spirit of protocols and consistent denial. Parallel to this, on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, denial policy and ‘adjustment’ of history gets a new dimension,” President said.

The Armenian leader said he regretted that the Turkish authorities turned a deaf ear to Armenia’s calls.

“Therefore, I have decided to recall from the National Assembly of Armenia the protocols “On establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Turkey” and “On the development of relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Turkey” that were signed in Zurich on October 10,” President said.
