Today the European Parliament discussed and adopted Swedish
parliamentarian Per Gahrton’s report on the South Caucasus, the press
service of the Armenian Foreign Ministry informed Arminfo news agency.
The article on the handover to Azerbaijan of five districts, which are
under the Karabakh side’s control, in exchange for the opening of the Baku
– Nakhichevan – Yerevan rail link was withdrawn from the report after
heated debates. Thanks to the efforts of the Armenian lobby, 11 new
proposals were included in the report. The European Parliament again
confirmed its decision that one of the conditions of Turkey’s admission to
the European Union should be recognition of the Armenian genocide in
Ottoman Turkey at the beginning of the 20th century. The European
Parliament called on Yerevan and Ankara to start constructive dialogue and
also called on Turkey and Azerbaijan to stop the blockade of Armenia.
The European Parliament also discussed in detail energy issues in the
South Caucasus region. The closure of the Armenian nuclear power
station was raised, not as a demand but in connection with regional
development in the energy sphere, in particular, the construction of the
Baku-Ceyhan oil pipeline. It was noted that the issue of the
Armenian nuclear power station had acquired a certain nuance against the
continuing blockade of Armenia by Turkey and Azerbaijan.
